OTTAWA — As the April 28 election day approaches, the Mechanical Contractors Association of 17³Ô¹ÏÍø (MCAC) is calling on federal political parties to “Build 17³Ô¹ÏÍø Now†by implementing policies that will help the sector build a stronger country.
“Our industry is a significant contributor to the Canadian economy and to the livelihoods of Canadians,†said Tania Johnston, MCAC chief executive officer, in a statement. “If we are going to build the strong 17³Ô¹ÏÍø for the next generations, it is critical that political parties implement policies to support the mechanical contracting sector and ultimately remove impediments for our industry.â€
In particular, the MCAC is calling on the parties to:
Support workforce development initiatives in “growth-critical†jobs.
- Support Red Seal trades employed by 17³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s mechanical contractors.
- Tie immigration levels to economic needs.
- Help women and businesses offset the often higher costs of gender specific personal protective equipment.
Remove impediments for 17³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s mechanical contractors and create a business-friendly environment.
- Promote the use of standard form contracts.
- Ensure Canadian contractors and suppliers are preferred on publicly funded or Crown corporation procured construction projects.
- Create more collaboration between industry and government on infrastructure planning and execution.
Ensure supports are available for contractors negatively impacted by tariffs imposed by the United States.
- Implement a reprieve from Canadian countermeasures on construction-related materials and goods.
- Provide support for businesses impacted by slowdowns because of the tariffs and countermeasures.
The mechanical contracting sector employs more than 227,000 Canadians, contributes more than $30 billion to the Canadian economy and accounts for $18 billion in wages paid to hard-working Canadians, says the MCAC.
